Mr. Gertsburg began his legal career working for two large regional business firms where he represented private- and publicly-traded companies and non-profit organization of all sizes, as well as their owners, in litigation along the entire spectrum of business disputes. Mr. Gertsburg then served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for Broadvox, a Cleveland based next-generation telecommunications company starting in 2006. His legal work for Broadvox included corporate restructuring, commercial transactions, real estate deals, lending, investing, employment, and spearheading the company’s litigation strategy, personally litigating most of its cases.
In 2003, Mr. Gertsburg was called up with the 762d Transportation Co., an Army Reserve Unit based in Akron, Ohio, to serve in Iraq. He deployed with his unit for a year, serving as a platoon leader and convoy commander before demobilizing from active duty.
Mr. Turner comes to the firm after 13 years as a litigator at Gallagher Sharp. Before becoming an attorney, he served as a financial manager for a small business after earning his MBA. He has represented a diverse array of clients and successfully litigated matters ranging from small business disputes to class actions. Mark’s extensive legal and business background results in a proactive approach to law – finding cost-effective solutions rather than spending valuable resources to win at all costs. His practice includes litigation, business advising, nonprofit consulting and probate.
Mr. Haskell brings over 10 years experience advising organizations in business transactions and disputes to the firm. Previously, Nate served as in-house counsel for FirstEnergy Corp advising business units on governance, compliance and disclosure issues. His expertise also spans a combined 8 years representing banks, middle market businesses, private equity firms, and public companies in business transactions and compliance matters. With experience representing businesses as outside counsel and in-house, clients benefit from a results-based approach to resolving legal issues.
Ms. Pauken draws on over 20 years of experience as a lawyer to provide wise and compassionate advice, unique to each client’s personal and family situation. Ms. Pauken helps her clients plan for the preservation and distribution of their assets, often through the use of trusts. She advises clients when a spouse or elderly family member is facing admission to a nursing home or long-term care facility, helping them navigate the often confusing world of Medicaid eligibility and asset preservation. Ms. Pauken also advises and advocates for children with special educational needs, to help them obtain the services they need in order to thrive. She assists their parents with guardianships, conservatorships, and special needs trusts, along with general estate planning.
Ryan Sears is the head of the firm’s criminal defense practice. A Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, Mr. Sears has over 13 years of service with the U.S. Navy JAG Corps, where he focused his practice on the defense of service members facing administrative and criminal disciplinary proceedings. He also handles complex civil litigation and appellate work.
Mr. Friedman focuses his practice on counseling businesses of all shapes and sizes in various aspects of business law, commercial contracts, and corporate and real estate transactions. Mr. Friedman worked in global market development prior to practicing law, and helped launch and take new technologies to the market. Gene graduated cum laude from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. In law school, he received the coveted CALI Excellence for the Future awards for his performance in Commercial Law and Legal Drafting. He is admitted to all Ohio state courts.
Mr. Julian’s practice focuses on commercial litigation, and he is admitted to practice in all Ohio state courts. He earned his J.D. from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in May 2015. During law school, he completed a judicial externship in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He was also a legal writing teaching assistant, a member of the Cleveland-Marshall Moot Court Team, and an editor of the Journal of Law and Health. He is a member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. Prior to law school, Mr. Julian taught English at Sun Yat-sen University in Southern China.

Ms. James serves as Administrative Assistant at The Gertsburg Law Firm, successfully supporting the attorneys and making visitors feel welcome. She has worked for law firms since 1989, both here in the United States and in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Carmen is active with her Church and takes care of her friends when they are ill. In her free time, Carmen loves playing soccer and reading. Ms. James brings glowing reviews from her former employers and has become a dependable and friendly member of the Gertsburg Law family.
Ms. Koballa has worked as a staff accountant for more than 20 years in CPA firms for small businesses. She is a proud member of the Delta Zeta sorority and has been certified in QuickBooks and payroll. Outside of work, Ms. Koballa enjoys cooking, travelling, and spending time with her family, friends, and her dog, Tucker the pit bull. You can also find her during football season cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes and the WVU Mountaineers.
Ms. Krakowski is a proud graduate of Kent State University with a degree in Sociology with a concentration in Paralegal Studies. Her eight years in the legal field include landlord/tenant, bankruptcy, collection and civil litigation law. She is also a Notary Public in the State of Ohio. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring the great outdoors with her dog, travelling, especially within Alaska, and spending quality time with her fantastic family and friends. Julianne is from Aurora, Ohio.
Ms. Selby has a degree in Cognitive Science from the University of California, Irvine, and has previously taught psychology and worked as a researcher in the field of education and dementia care. She spent last year travelling with her new husband, and they just welcomed their first child in October. Nelly serves as Project Manager at The Gertsburg Law Firm, and will oversee the annual We Solve Problems Essay Contest in addition to the wide range of events sponsored by the firm throughout the year.
